My Place on the LoTi continuum

posted Wednesday, 16 April 2008

As a student teacher I would say I am definitely around Level 1 on the LoTi continuum. I use technology for my own purposes of email, research, spreadsheets, etc, yet I have not incorporated it into my student teaching assignment. My master teacher has a daily computer schedule which involves students practicing with the Paint program, word processing and kid pix. I have not yet become involved in their computer lessons.

As an observer, I would say most teachers I have seen are a Level 0. In two classrooms I observed in the computers were never turned on in my presence. In one classroom, students were allowed to use the computer in Paint or Microsoft Word before school started or during indoor recess.

As a student, I would say I probably reached about a Level 2 in high school. I was in a very cool class called EAST lab (Environmental and Spatial Technology). This class allowed students to be anywhere on the LoTi continuum from Level 1 to a Level 6. Some of my classmates used GPS to map a local marine preserve called Kealia Pond. It was a intense project. To be honest, I'm not even sure what they did with all their work. Personally, I experimented with creating Flash movies and working with Adobe Photoshop. I eventually used Photoshop to create materials for a Tutoring project through my school. I also worked with a lot of PowerPoints. Today as a graduate student, I find myself less involved with technology than ever before. Of course this class is forcing change upon me, but I welcome it!

Kate,

You have a lot of great tech experiences. Using Flash, Photoshop, and PowerPoint you have covered a lot of the presentation/expression tools, lots widely used on the web. I know that it can be difficult sometimes to utilize technology when one is in a student teaching situation since you are usually bound to the habits, expertise, and evaluation of your teacher. Have you tried Google Docs? There is a presentation tool there very similar to PowerPoint, as well as a quick and easy way to post a web page with links. Get a Google mail account and explore the other tools that come along with it (if you don't already have one). -- Terry

Kate,

I totally agree with Terry, you have had lots of great exposure to a good amount of programs. I can however understand feeling as if you are not using those skills. I have yet to learn Photoshop myself. It seems so unfortunate that in the classrooms you have been in the computers don't get used. I also think it is awesome that you are ready, willing, and able to learn more about NEW technology.

Kate,

Your blog comment are similar to mines in that I am also I level one. In high school I had similar experiences (the one computer class), I complete many assignment on the computer. However it was not until college that the computer became my best friend. I lost many papers. But now in my leisured I am become more of an expert. One thing about technology is that it take time. It takes time to practice. It constantly improves. However those who do not know how to use it are being left behind. So I will always try to improve myself.
