I did it!

posted Wednesday, 7 May 2008

I finally finished my podcast.  After the conversation in class tonight, I really wanted to try to add sound effects to my podcast.  I’m pleased with the results, seeing as how it is my first experience with podcasting.  However, I think I could learn a lot more and experiment more with different effects and more sounds.  Of course I wouldn’t want to over do it, but when the audience is a classroom of kids, I think sound effects are appreciated J

This has been a really good experience.  I had no idea what a podcast was before a few weeks ago and now I’m very excited about them!  I hope the kids enjoy it.  Click here to listen.

**(For Laura and anyone else who was curious)

I googled sound effects and checked out a bunch of different sites.  The best one, and the one where I found all the sound effects that are in my podcast is Soundsnap.com.  I highly recommend it.  It has a huge variety of high quality sound effects.

Hi Miss Kate,

  • This is Victoria. I listend to your podcast and I

thought you did very good. I thought you spoke loudly and clearly. I didn't think you spoketoo fast or too slow you were right in the middle. But I do think you paused for a little too long at first but then you got better. Your voice was really smooth and I could understand every word you said. I also learned something from your podcast. I didn't realize that hitting bees would affect us getting honey for breakfast. I thought you did a really good job.

Dear Miss Kate,

I heard your podcast. I thought you spoke loudly and clearly. I like to protect nature. I never littered in my life. I like all of the sounds you put it to make it more real. Once I saw a turtle in my front yard I thought it was a snaping turtle. I thought it was a snaping turtle because when you rubbed it's nose it would open it's mouth. It would do that because he thought your finger was food! I picked it up and put it in a box. The only reason I took care of it was because it's shell was cracked. I only kept him for three days. I kept him for three days because my mom said he might have babies waiting for him to get food somewhere. Thats all for now. Bye!

sincerely, Tomeisha

Hi Miss Kate I just listened to your podcast. I think you had a loud clear voice. I could hear and understand every thing you said. I think you spoke at the right speed. Your words were a little choppy. You took a lot of long stops when you did not need to. The idea of the story I thought to be very interesting. I thought it was interesting, to hear because I had learned a lot more about nature. I already know that your not suppost to litter and you should not either. I learned that you should not tare off branches. I also learned not to pick flowers. Even though I don't pick flowers now. The only thing you need to fix in your podcasts is the long stops.

Dear Kate,

  • I listened to your podcast. I think you spoke clearly. When you do a podcast you want to speak a little quicker and not stop when you are talking. I learned that you should not pick flowers and I really liked all of the sounds. I thing you took a little extra time for your first time but you REALLY did a good Job.

Hey Kate, Just listened to your podcast, and I like that your book choice pertains to the Earth Day themes of the last month. I tried to add sound effects to mine, but was unsuccessful at finding and downloading any in MP3 form that sounded clear. I should find out which website you used to track yours down, because they sound incredible and the layers and levels are well placed in your podcast. Your reading is clear, well paced, and expressive. My only suggestion would be to add a little commentary either in preparation of the reading or a debrief if you were going to use the podcast as a self-contained lesson, which I'm not sure was the point anyway. I really liked hearing your work, and want to hear more about your sound effects!!! :)

Kate, your podcast was fantastic! I loved your choice in story and the sound effects were unbelievable. Not only were the sounds clear, but you interjected them into the story in the perfect place. I would definitely say that ll of your sound searching paid off, because the sound effects add a lot to your podcast, seeing as we can't see the images from the story. I would have to agree with Laura in the sense that I would love a little introduction before you start reading the story, but at the same time you did kind of set us up with your comments on your blog. Anyways, I really enjoyed your podcast Kate!

Kate, The sound effects were great, and it seemed like you were pretty confident in using them. They really did add a lot to the story. What really struck me more than anything else though were the comments from the children! It is so evident that they made personal and world connections to your book, which I think you should be proud of. Their comments were so cute and insightful and enabled us to get to know them a little bit better. Through this story, you gave them a chance to express themselves on a topic that was clearly important to them.

I agree with Laure and Jess on adding maybe a sentence or two to the beginning of the story to set the scene or get them thinking about what nature means to them. However, judging by the responses of the kids, they didn't really need the extra instruction! :)

I was really impressed by your podcast. You have a great voice for reading stories. But what I love the most is the cool sound effects added. They really add alot of favor to the podcast. I will try to use sound effects on my next podcast.

Kate you did a great job! Im'm sure it took a while to figure out how to use the sound effects. I loved them! You used them in the perfect spots that is what made them so perfect. You read aloud very clearly and the pace at which you read was perfect. Overall, I think it was wonderful. I agree that there could have been an intro, but didn't find it to be necessary.Great job!
